Recently I was fortunate enough to attend Digital Branding Analytics Miami (#DBAmiami), a marketing conference organized by Florida International University. Each of the discussions I attended were relevant to my career and education, but I found Britney Muller’s presentation on “Hacker Turned SEO Professional” beneficial to my coursework and career.Britney Muller is Senior SEO Scientist at Moz.
Britney Muller got her start in the marketing field in a rather unique way – she was a hacker. While it’s not something that she recommends, she was able to use a lot of the knowledge she gained during this time in her life to become an SEO whiz. Hacking, even at a lower level, can teach you a lot about tech and how websites work. In order to rank high on Google searches, you need two things: great content and backlinks. She describes backlinks with a real life scenario – that if three completely unrelated people come to you and tell you the same thing, you will assume it’s true. Google thinks and processes in the same way.
During my studies in the Master of Science in Marketing program at Florida International University, I have particularly enjoyed learning about how websites are ranked on searches and how search engines crawl through data on the web. Hearing Britney Muller speak of the ways that she got into the business and learned while doing made me excited to learn more about this topic.
